First aid is the immediate care for an illness or injury. It is usually performed by non-expert, but trained personnel to a sick or injured person until more advanced medical treatment can be provided. Some illnesses or minor injuries may not require medical care after first aid intervention. First Aid generally consists of a series of simple and in some cases such as shock intervention and CPR, life-saving techniques that an individual can be trained to perform with minimal equipment. The primary mandate of First Aid is to protect the rescuer and the casualty and to do no further harm to either party.
